My Alaska Adventure...

Arriving in Anchorage

TRAVEL WRITING BY MARIEL MASQUE

The first sound you notice when you land in Anchorage, Alaska, is the surreal call of wild geese flocking over the city that never sleeps.

Turning 60 does not have to slow you down. In fact, you reach the top of the hill, and find a better view from this new height. In Japan, people celebrate their 60s as a new commencement, the beginning of a new era in one's life. For some of us, the added gray hair is a reminder to live fuller lives, engage in meaningful activities, and cherry pick our habits. Just when I thought I would spend my birthday horseback riding in the Sonoran Desert among stinging chollas, prickly pears, and spiny Saguaros with a friendly horse named Zodiac, I had an epiphany. What do I want to be when I grow up?

THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

“Imagine a Cuban raised  in the sultry Caribbean Sea as she explores glaciers in Alaska. If that is not a surreal wild geese, I don't know what is!”
